Tokerau shawl

 I have presented several shawls in this blog. However, all of my previous shawls are intended to be worn on my shoulders instead of my neck as a scarf. For a rather long time, I had a sketch of a scarf in my head combining two hand dyed colors from Nurja, Ruusukvartsi and Sielu. Ruusukvartsi is a gorgeous muted pink and Sielu looks like the shell of a beetle. With these colors, the scarf would go with all of my spring/autumn and winter jackets. The availability issues of merino sock base delayed my project quite a bit, but eventually I got my hands on the yarns I wanted. 

The pattern I used was Tokerau Shawl by Francoise Danoy (arohaknits in instagram!). The pattern is free and available here. I used the darker yarn, Sielu, for the bud stitch, and the lighter one, Ruusukvartsi, for the lace motif. I modified the repeats of the patterns according to how much yarn I had left. I made 2.5 repeats of the bud stitch and 2.5 repeats of the lace. For the bind-off I had only a little yarn left, so I made a simple eyelet row and then picot bind-off. Eventually I was left with 10 cm of the darker yarn and that was perfectly enough to weave in.   

I used 4.0 mm needles for the scarf, but 4.5 mm for bind-off to ensure it's flexible. I love this color combination and I am sure I will get a lot of use out of this scarf! The Ravelry project page is here.

Olen blogissani esitellyt useamman huivin, mutta kaikki nuo huivit ovat hartiahuiveja eikä kaulahuiveja. Melko pitkään minulla onkin ollut mielessäni kaulahuivi kahdesta Nurjan käsinvärjätystä sävystä, Ruusukvartsista ja Sielusta. Ruusukvartsi on kaunis vaaleanpunainen ja Sielu näyttää kovakuoriaisen kuorelta. Tämä väriyhdistelmä sopii kaikkiin kevät/syksy- ja talvitakkeihini, jolloin huivista tulee mahdollisimman monikäyttöinen. Huivin tekeminen kuitenkin viivästyi jonkin verran Merino Sock lankapohjan saatavuusongelmien vuoksi. 

Käytin huivissa Francoise Danoyn (instagramissa arohaknits!) Tokerau Shawl huiviohjetta, joka on ilmaiseksi saatavilla täällä. Tein nyppyosiot Sielulla ja pitsiosiot Ruusukvartsilla. Muokkasin osioiden määrää langan riittävyyden mukaan ja teinkin molempia osioita 2.5 toistoa. Minulla oli vain vähän lankaa jäljellä päättelyä varten, joten tein yksinkertaisen reikärivin ja sen jälkeen picot-päättelyn. Loppujen lopuksi minulla jäi tummaa lankaa vain 10 cm jäljelle ja se oli juuri sopivasti langanpään päättelyyn.

Käytin 4.0 mm puikkoja huiviin, mutta päättelykerroksen tein 4.5 mm puikoilla, jotta siitä tuli varmasti tarpeeksi joustava. Rakastan tätä väriyhdistelmää ja tämä huivi pääseekin varmasti kovaan käyttöön! Projektin Ravelry sivu on täällä.

Kassiani

My favorite shawl shape is half-circle. Previously, I have made two half-circle shawl, a blue one and a black one. From experience I know that a big half-circle shawl requires two skeins of fingering weight yarn. I love to make shawls from hand dyed yarns and as Christmas present last year I got two skeins of Nurja Merino sock yarn in colorway Spinelli. This color is such an amazing pink! It varies from nearly white to darker pink and all the way to burgundy speckles.

The pattern I chose for this yarn is Kassiani by Dee O'Keefe. Kassiani is a beautiful detailed half-circle shawl with probably one of the clearest pattern instructions I have ever encountered in my life. The layout and overall flow of the instructions are great and to top it off, the lace motifs are both charted and written out! I can fully recommend the pattern!

Knitting this shawl was pure joy to me! I love knitting lace patterns and shawls don't have the aspect of fit and trying on the product as sweaters and cardigans do.

I used 4.5 mm needle for the main part, but 5.5 mm needle for the bind off as instructed. I still don't have special blocking equipment, so I just soaked the shawl and spread it to dry on my bathroom floor. The shawl dried in a few hours and the lace opened very beautifully just by this method. I really love my new pink shawl! Ravelry page of the project is here. 

Puoliympyrä on lempimuotoni huiveihin. Olen aiemmin tehnyt kaksi puoliympyrän muotoista huivia, sinisen ja mustan. Näistä huiveista olen oppinut, että sopivan isoon huiviin tarvitsen kaksi vyyhtiä fingering-paksuista lankaa. Huiveihin lempilankani on ihanat käsinvärjätyt merinolangat ja sainkin viime vuonna joululahjaksi kaksi vyyhtiä Nurjan Merino sock -lankaa värissä Spinelli. Tämä väri on todella upea pinkki! Väri vaihtelee todella vaaleasta pinkistä melko tummaan pinkkiin ja siitä jopa viininpunaisiin speckleihin! 

Valitsin langalle sopivaksi ohjeeksi Dee O'Keefen Kassianin. Kassiani on todella kaunis yksityiskohtainen puoliympyrähuivi, jonka ohje on ehkäpä yksi selkeimmistä mitä olen ikinä käyttänyt! Ohjeen asettelu ja huivin ohjeen kulku ovat todella hyvät ja tämän päälle ohjeen pitsit ovat saatavilla sekä kaavioina että aukikirjoitettuna. Voin suositella ohjetta erittäin lämpimästi!

Huivin neulominen oli minulle silkkaa riemua. Rakastan neuloa huiveja, koska kuvioiden neulominen on mielestäni ihanaa ja huivin kanssa ei tarvitse murehtia istuvuudesta ja sovituksista, kuten villapaitojen tai -takkien kanssa. 

Käytin suurimmaksi osaksi 4.5 mm puikkoja, mutta päättelemiseen käytin 5.5 mm puikkoja. Minulla ei edelleenkään ole tarvikkeita huivien "blokkaamiseen", joten pesin ja kastelin huivin huolellisesti, jonka jälkeen levitin sen kuivumaan kylpyhuoneeni lattialle. Huivi kuivui muutamassa tunnissa ja pitsikuvio aukesi kauniisti ihan tälläkin tekniikalla. Rakastan uutta pinkkiä huiviani! Projektin Ravelry sivu täällä. 

Lace shawl for my sister

The final Christmas I finished was the lace shawl for my sister. I used the same yarn as in the shawl for my mother, but I used a different pattern. I found the pattern from Kotivinkki Parhaat sukat ja neuleet magazine. Based on the fine print on the side of the pattern, I am pretty confident this shawl is designed by Päivi Mäkinen, but I am not 100% sure as it is not directly mentioned in the pattern.

I used 3.0 mm needles with Drops Lace yarn. I was not the biggest fan of this yarn, when I knit my mother's shawl, but I think this is slowly growing on me. I quite like the feather light finish and delicate feel of this yarn! More pictures of the shawl are in my Ravelry project page.

Viimeinen joululahja, jonka sain valmiiksi, on pitsihuivi siskolleni. Käytin samaa lankaa kuin äitini pitsihuivissa, mutta käytin eri ohjetta. Käyttämäni ohje on Kotivinkin Parhaat sukat ja neuleet -lehdestä. Olen melko varma, että huivin on suunnitellut Päivi Mäkinen, koska nimi oli printattuna pienellä ohjeen reunassa, mutta en ole asiasta 100% varma, koska suunnittelijan nimeä ei ole suoraan ohjeessa mainittuna.

Käytin 3.00 mm puikkoja ja Drops Lace lankaa. Neuloessani pitsihuivia äidilleni en ollut kovin innoissani tästä langasta, mutta selkeästi pikkuhiljaa alan pitää tästä langasta. Sen höyhenenkevyt ja herkkä neuletulos onkin oikeastaan todella ihana! Enemmän kuvia huivista löytyy Ravelrystäni.

Morrígan

The first Christmas gift for this year is now finished! My mom always admires my knitted lace shawls and scarfs, so I made her one using the free pattern Morrígan by Hedgehog fibers. This pattern is so lovely! It was easy to follow and the result is stunning! I followed the pattern fully except I added a garter edge and 1-2 more repeats of the repeat chart (I lost count how many I added...). The wingspan of the scarf is approximately 1.8 meters, which you can kind of see in the picture (I am 174cm tall). 

I don't have any tools for properly blocking my work, so I again just washed and spread the shawl to dry. I will see if I will one day get one of those puzzle piece playmats for these purposes, however I know my mom does not have those either and as she washes and uses this shawl, it would just be washed and dried flat. As a result of my poor blocking, the edge doesn't have points. Rather it is like a frilly edge. Different, but still a nice result especially for a scarf wrapped around the neck!

I used 3.5 mm needles and Drops Lace yarn. I am not a big fan of this yarn, because it was simultaneously slippery and sticky on the needles. Originally the scarf felt a bit itchy, but washing it once softened it a lot! You can see more details and pictures in my Ravelry project page.

Tämän vuoden ensimmäinen joululahja on vihdoin valmis! Äitini ihastelee huivejani, joten neuloin hänelle pitsihuivin Hedgehog fibersin ilmaisohjeella Morrígan. Tämä ohje on oikein ihana! Juuri sopivan helppo neuloa ja muistaa, mutta samalla lopputulos on todella näyttävä. Seurasin ohjetta täysin, mutta lisäsin ainaoikein reunan sekä toistin toistokaaviota 1-2 kertaa enemmän kuin neuvottiin (menin laskuissa sekaisin). Huivin "siipiväli" on noin 1.8 metriä.

Minulla ei edelleenkään ole oikeastaan minkäänlaisia työkaluja huivien pingoittamiseen, joten vain pesin ja levitin huivin kuivumaan tasolla. Voisin toki hankkia sellaisen lasten leikkimaton pingoitusalustaksi, mutta äidillänikään ei ole pingoitusvälineitä, joten kun hän käyttää ja pesee huivia, se joka tapauksessa aina vain levitetään kuivumaan. Puuttellisen pingoituksen vuoksi huivin reunassa ei ole teräviä nyppyjä, vaan enemmänkin frillamainen reunus. Tulos on toki erilainen huivin ohjeesta, mutta silti varsin kaunis erityisesti kaulassa pidettävään huiviin.

Käytin 3.5mm puikkoja ja Drops Lace lankaa. En pitänyt tästä langasta kovin paljoa, koska se tuntuu samaan aikaan liukkaalta ja tahmealta puikoilla. Lisäksi huivi tuntui aluksi hieman kutiavaiselta, mutta onneksi se pehmeni pesussa. Lisää tietoa ja enemmän kuvia löytyy projektin Ravelry-sivulta. 

The shawl that was knit in 10 days

After finishing my previous shawl, I was left with the feeling to make another one. While I was grocery shopping, I briefly visited the yarn section and ended up walking out of the shop with some skeins of black Baby merino by Novita with a shawl in mind. I enjoyed knitting the half-circle Camping shawl by Mwaa Knits so much that I chose the half-circle Hearts shawl as the pattern I would use. I would say that the biggest difference between these two shawls was the difficulty level. The Hearts shawl portrays only two different lace motifs both of which are so simple that you learn them immediately whereas the Camping half-circle has several more lace motifs, which are way more complicated. I modified the Hearts shawl a little as I used the edging from the Camping shawl instead of the instructed one.

I finished the shawl in 10 days using 5.5 mm needles. I had never before used Baby merino yarn by Novita, so at first I was rather surprised to see how flexible and squishy the yarn was. The result turned out great though! This was also the first time of knitting a bigger garment using black yarn. I have always been slightly scared of using black yarn, because I thought that I could not see the stitches well. However, I was quite wrong. With enough light, I had no trouble in knitting black yarn. I will for sure make more garments in this color as well!

Viimeisimmän huivini jälkeen minulle jäi sellainen tunne, että haluaisin neuloa vielä toisenkin huivin. Kävikin sitten niin, että ruokakaupasta tarttui mukaani muutama kerä Novitan Baby merinoa. Edellinen huivini, Mwaa Knitsin Camping shawl puoliympyräversiona, oli niin mukava neulomus, että valitsin uudeksi huivikseni saman suunnittelijan Hearts-huivin puoliympyrämuodossa. Suurin ero näiden kahden mallin välillä lienee niiden vaikeustaso. Hearts-huivissa toistuu vain kaksi yksinkertaista pitsikuviota, kun taas Camping-huivissa pitsit ovat monimutkaisia ja niitä on useampi erilainen. Poikkesin Hearts-huivin ohjeesta sen verran, että tein saman reunuksen kuin Camping-huivissa enkä sitä mikä tässä ohjeessa oli opastettu.

Sain huivin valmiiksi 10 päivässä 5.5 mm puikoilla. En ollut ikinä aiemmin käyttänyt Novitan Baby merinoa, joten olin todella yllättynyt miten joustavaa lanka olikaan. Lopputuloksesta tuli kuitenkin hyvä eli joustavuus ei ainakaan tässä työssä mitenkään haitannut. Tämä oli myös ensimmäinen kerta, kun käytin mustaa lankaa vaatteen neulomiseen. Olen aina ollut hieman varautunut mustalla neulomisen suhteen, koska pelkäsin etten näkisi silmukoita kunnolla puikoilla. Pelko kuitenkin osoittatui aivan turhaksi, koska riittävässä valossa minulla ei ollut minkäänlaisia ongelmia. Olenkin melko varma, että tulen neulomaan vielä lisää tällä värillä!

Elizabeth Zimmermann 100th Anniversary Camping shawl

Last Christmas, my parents gifted me two skeins of the most beautiful fingering weight yarn from PetrichorYarns. The material, being 50% merino wool and 50% cotton, screamed that it would make the most perfect shawl. I rummaged through Ravelry, and the pattern I liked the most was the Elizabeth Zimmermann 100th Anniversary half-circle Camping shawl by Mwaa Knit.

This yarn was probably the softest one I have ever worked with, however it was not uncomfortably slippery on the needles. Combined with the pattern I chose, it felt like the shawl was knitting itself. The timestamps would show that I knit this shawl for 1.5 months, but in reality I was traveling for over a week in the middle of all and working on other projects as well. I would definitely recommend trying PetrichorYarns and picking up one of these anniversary shawls by Mwaa Knit! I may already have the next one on the needles...

I used 4.5 mm circular needles. Even though the pattern instructions advice to block the shawl intensively, I just mildly washed mine and spread it out to dry on my bathroom floor. I like the result of "blocking" shawls this way as I am not a fan of the pointy blocked edges in shawls. The details of the project are in Ravelry.

Viime vuonna sain joululahjaksi vanhemmiltani kaksi vyyhtiä aivan ihastuttavaa fingering-vahvuista lankaa PetrichorYarnsilta. Lanka on 50% merinovillaa ja 50% puuvillaa, joten se sopii erityisen hyvin huivilangaksi. Löysinkin Ravelrystä Mwaa Knitin Elizabeth Zimmermann vuosipäivähuivin ohjeen ja ihastuin siihen.

Osa merinovillalangoista on todella liukkaita puikoilla, mutta tämä lanka oli todella mukava neuloa. Lanka on ehdottomasti yksi pehmeimmistä, jota olen ikinä työstänyt. Lisäksi valitsemani huivin ohje oli niin hyvin kirjoitettu, että huivi tuntui suorastaan neulovan itse itseään. Päivämäärien mukaan olisin neulonut tätä huivia puolitoista kuukautta, mutta todellisuudessa olin tällä aikavälillä yli viikon matkoilla ja neuloin myös muita projektejani. Voin lämpimästi suositella kokeilemaan PetrichorYarnsin lankoja ja neulomaan näitä EZ vuosipäivähuiveja! Minulla saattaakin olla jo uusi versio puikoilla.....

Käytin 4.5 mm pyöröpuikkoja. Huivin ohjeessa opastetaan blokkaamaan huivi voimakkaasti, mutta minä vain pesin omani kevyesti ja levitin kuivumaan kylpyhuoneen lattialle.
