Juliana

While buying yarn is admittedly quite lovely, being able to use my existing stash makes me even happier. When I bought Gjestal Merino BabyUll for my Hattara sweater, I bought enough to match the pattern instructions which means that cropping the sweater left me with quite a lot of leftovers. I scrolled Drops website for inspiration what to make and run into Juliana sweater pattern. Unfortunately, the pattern was bottom-up and I wanted a top-down construction to be able to knit as long as I have yarn. Therefore, I essentially combined two patterns; I used Anna Johanna's La Grasse Matinée to guide in the construction of a wide neckline top-down sweater and the placement of yarnover details from Juliana by DropsDesign. The top-down construction is extremely convenient, because it allowed me to use the pink yarn to the last meter. Had I added more random white stripes, I would have been able to use all of the white yarn as well!

I used 3.00 mm needles just like in the Hattara sweater. I have very high hopes for this yarn, because my Hattara sweater has so far no signs of usage although I have used it quite a bit! However, it's noteworthy that this yarn knits up very uneven but it relaxes and smoothens upon washing, so I would definitely recommend washing the garment after it is finished. Langan ostaminen on luonnollisesti aivan ihanaa, mutta lähiaikoina olen pyrkinyt käyttämään lankavarastoani pienemmäksi. Kun ostin Gjestalin Merino BabyUll -lankaa Hattarapaitaani, ostin sitä ohjeen mukaisen määrän eli normaalimittaisen paidan verran. Lopulta kuitenkin lyhensin Hattarapaitani hihat ja helman eli minulla jäi melko paljon lankaa yli. Selailin Dropsin sivuilta inspiraatiota mitä haluaisin ylijääneestä langasta tehdä ja löysin Juliana-paidan, jonka pääntiehen ihastuin. Juliana neulotaan kuitenkin alhaalta ylöspäin ja halusin mieluummin neuloa paidan ylhäältä alaspäin, jotta saan kaiken langan kulutettua. Otinkin Julianasta idean pääntien ja raglaneiden reikäkuvioon, mutta kaarrokkeen muotoilut Anna Johannan La Grasse Matinée -paidasta. Neulomalla paidan ylhäältä alaspäin sain sopivasti kulutettua vaaleanpunaisen langan viimeistä metriä myöden. Jos olisin tehnyt valkoisia raitoja enemmän, olisin saanut myös valkoisen langan kulutettua kokonaan, mutta nyt sitä jäi vähän yli. 

Käytin 3.00 mm puikkoja kuten Hattara-paidassakin. Minulla on melko suuret odotukset tämän langan suhteen, koska olen käyttänyt Hattara-paitaani melko paljon ja se on edelleen kuin uusi. Huomattavaa kuitenkin on, että tämä lanka neuloontuu alunperin hyvin epätasaisesti, mutta heti kastelussa neulejälki tasoittuu ja siliää, joten kastelu on välttämätöntä tälle langalle. Hattara sweater

 

One of my goals for 2020 was to learn to knit brioche and I had in fact purchased the Hattara paita pattern and yarns for it already in the summer of 2020. However, it was the first days of 2021 when I finally decided to tackle this challenge but that's close enough! 

The pattern I chose was Hattara paita by Daria Virrankari. This pattern is written in such a clear and understandable way that I learned brioche based on the instructions in the pattern alone. Somehow I thought that brioche would be very complicated but turned out, it is rather simple. I warmly recommend to give it a try!

I used Gjestal Merino Baby Ull yarn on 3.00 mm needles. The pattern recommended a much bigger needle, but I reached gauge with this size. I only modified the patter so that I shortened the body to waist length and the sleeves to 3/4-length. I am very happy with these modifications because I wanted a short sweet sweater that would go well with high waist skirts which I wear on a daily basis. This sweater turned out just as I imagined! Yksi vuoden 2020 käsityötavoitteistani oli opetella neulomaan briossia. Jo kesällä 2020 ostin Hattara paidan ohjeen ja siihen sopivat langat. Elettiin kuitenkin jo vuoden 2021 ensimmäisiä päiviä, kun päätin vihdoin opetella briossin. Tavoite saavutettu tarpeeksi lähellä aiottua!

Hattara paita on Daria Virrankarin ohje. Ohje on kirjoitettu niin selkeästi ja ymmärrettävästi, että opin briossin suoraan ohjetta seuraamalla. Luulin, että briossi olisi todella monimutkainen tekniikka mutta kävi ilmi että se on oikeastaan melko helppoa! Suosittelen lämpimästi kokeilemaan sitä!

Käytin Gjestalin Merino Baby Ull lankaa 3.00 mm puikoilla. Ohjeessa suositellaan isompaa puikkokokoa, mutta saavutin ohjetiheyden tällä puikolla. Ainoa muokkaus mitä tein ohjeeseen oli vartalon lyhentäminen vyötärölle ja hihojen 3/4-pituuteen. Tein muokkaukset, jotta saisin paidasta söpön ja lyhyen käytettäväksi korkeavyötaröisten hameiden kaverina. Paidasta tuli juuri sellainen kuin mistä haaveilinkin! Gardegate

I learned stranded knitting last year and ever since, I have wanted to make a colorwork sweater. After a long time of thinking about it, I decided to make Gardengate by Jennifer Steingass. I made several swatches with and without colorwork, decided on which size would be the best for me and started working on the sweater. Despite all the swatching, my colorwork tension relaxed significantly while working on the yoke and as a result, the sweater ended up too big for me. When I realised the size issue, I was already working on the body of the sweater after over a month of work on the colorwork yoke. Since knitting the yoke took me so long and the sweater happened to be a good fit on my sister, I decided to finish the sweater, give it to her and buy new yarn to make a smaller size for myself. This was the best decision as the work put into the yoke does not go to waste now! 

I used Regia Premium silk yarn which is so soft! It also has a gorgeous subtle sheen from the silk I presume, and the stitch definition is very good. I recommend this yarn very warmly!

Opettelin neulomaan kirjoneuletta viime vuonna ja siitä asti olen halunnut tehdä kirjoneulepaidan. Pitkän harkinnan jälkeen, päädyin tekemään Jennifer Steingassin Gardengate-paidan. Tein useita mallitilkkuja sekä kirjoneuleella että ilman, valitsin sopivan koon ja aloitin tekemään neuletta. Mallitilkuista huolimatta, kirjoneulekäsialani rentoutui kaarrokkeen aikana ja paidasta tulikin minulle liian iso. Huomasin ongelman paidan koossa vasta kaarrokkeen jälkeen paidan helmaa neuloessani. Olen melko hidas tekemään kirjoneuletta ja minulla meni kaarrokkeen tekemiseen noin kuukausi. Paita sattui sopivasti olemaan suunnilleen siskolleni sopiva, joten purkamisen sijaan teinkin paidan valmiiksi, annoin sen hänelle ja ostin uudet langat, jotta voin tehdä itselleni samanlaisen paidan pienempänä. Näin kirjoneuleeseen käyttämäni aika ja vaiva ei mennyt ollenkaan hukkaan vaan pääsee siskolleni käyttöön! 

Käytin Regian Premium silk -lankaa, joka on aivan käsittämättömän pehmeää! Langassa on myös silkistä tuleva hienovarainen kiilto ja silmukat erottuvat todella hyvin toisistaan neulepinnalla. Voin lämpimästi suositella tätä lankaa!

Lilac Poutapäivä

 

In the summer, I made a variegated pink Poutapäivä sweater using Novita Cotton soft yarn. That sweater turned out one of my most worn pieces of the summer and I wanted to make another one without the variegation in the color. My original plan was to make an identical sweater in lilac yarn with t-shirt sleeves, but since the seasons are starting to change I wanted to switch my plan and make long sleeves instead. Obviously, this generated a small problem with yarn because I didn't have enough. Luckily my local Prisma sells the yarn and they even had the same batch available! 

I used 3.5 mm needle to make the sweater and like last time, I did small modifications to the yoke and body. I decreased the final number of stitches in the yoke and added waist shaping to the body. The original pattern also does not have long sleeves so that is another modification. The pattern is available for free on Novitaknits website.

For some reason, this pattern really calls my name and even though I just finished my second sweater from the pattern, I feel like making yet another one! The Ravelry page of the project is here. 

Kesällä neuloin Novitan ohjeella Poutapäivä t-paidan monivärisestä pinkistä Cotton soft langasta. Tuosta paidasta tuli ehkäpä kesän käytetyin vaatteeni, joten halusin tehdä toisen version yksivärisestä langasta. Alunperin suunnitelmani oli tehdä täysin samanlainen paita kuin kesälläkin, mutta ilmojen viiletessä päätin sittenkin tehdä pitkät hihat. Minulla ei tietenkään ollut tarpeeksi lankaa pitkiin hihoihin, mutta onneksi lähiprismastani sain lisää lankaa ja vieläpä samassa erässä! Ihanaa!

Käytin 3.5 mm puikkoja ja kuten viimeksikin, tein ohjeeseen hieman muokkauksia. Kaarrokkeelta on poistettu silmukoita kuten pinkissäkin paidassa ja tein myös vyötärökavennuksia taas. Ohjeessa ei myöskään ole pitkiä hihoja, joten se on lisämuokkaus. Ohje on ilmaiseksi saatavilla Novitaknitsin uudistuneilta nettisivuilta.

Jostain syystä tämä ohje todella houkuttelee minua ja minun tekisi taas mieli tehdä uusi tällainen paita, vaikka juuri sain tämän valmiiksi! Paidan Ravelry projekti löytyy täältä.

My next summer knit project is again from Novita Summer extra 2020 magazine. The pattern is now available online for free though! You can find it here.

This was such a quick and fun knit. I made minor changes to the pattern again. I cast on the second smallest size and during the ribbing I decreased to the smallest size. This way I got some more space around the hip area. I also added some length to the top as I wanted the ribbing to end roughly at my waist rather than higher. I used Novita Siro yarn with 3.00 mm needles all throughout the work. There are more photos on my Ravelry project page.

I love this top! The top is also versatile, because I think with a cardigan and high-waisted skirt I can wear this one all year round. I have this same yarn in green and I am definitely planning to make another top identical to this one in green!

Seuraava kesäinen neuleeni on taas Novitan Kesäekstra 2020 lehdestä. Ohje on jo kuitenkin saatavilla ilmaiseksi netistä jo nyt. Löydät sen täältä.

Tämä toppi oli ihanan helppo ja nopea neule. Tein joitain pieniä muutoksia ohjeeseen. Aloitin topin toisiksi pienimmän koon silmukkamäärillä, jotka sitten kaventelin pois pieninmpään kokoon joustinneuleen aikana. Täten sain enemmän tilaa lantiolle. Tein topista myös hieman ohjetta pidemmän, koska halusin joustinneuleen loppuvan suunnilleen vyötärölle enkä sen yläpuolelle. Käytin ohjeen mukaisesti Novitan Siro -lankaa ja 3.00 mm puikkoja koko työn ajan. Topista on lisää kuvia Ravelryn projektisivullani.

Rakastan tätä toppia. Vaikka toppi onkin hyvin kesäinen neule, uskon käyttäväni tätä myös talvikausina neuletakin ja korkeavyötäröisen hameen kaverina. Minulla on tätä samaa lankaa vihreänä ja aion tehdä itselleni toisen samanlaisen topin vihreänä myös!

Apple blossom sweater

I have some leftover Filcolana Arwetta yarn from the No frills cardigan, that I was originally planning to make with double-held yarn. In the Novita Spring 2019 magazine, the lace top of one of the sweaters intrigued me. Since the magazine is already a bit older, the pattern is available free online here (in English!).

The construction of the sweater is bottom-up seamless and since sleeves are always difficult for me, I decided to start by knitting the sleeves. This was an awesome decision!

The lace of the sweater is very beautiful, but for my style, the shape of the sweater was not fitting. Because of this, I made the sweater in my own measurements with waist shaping and much more open neckline than the original one. I also replicated one of the lace motifs one extra time to get more height into the raglan yoke. The one criticism I have, is that in the pattern the raglan decreases are not charted into the pattern. This means that one has to be able to modify the edges of the lace accordingly. I had no trouble in doing that, but I would not recommend this pattern to a beginner because of this issue.

I used Filcona Arwetta in color 245 and 2.5 mm needles. To the ribbing of the sleeves and bottom of body I added a very thin silver yarn (stellina which is spun in some yarns readily). I bought the silver yarn in my local yarn shop and unfortunately, I don't know the brand!

I am very happy with my new sweater! I still have some Arwetta in this color left in my stash, we will see what I come up with that! The Ravelry page of my sweater is here.

No frills -villatakistani jäi ylimääräistä Filcolana Arwettaa, koska alunperin tarkoituksenani oli tehdä villatakki kaksinkertaisesta langasta, mutta teinkin sen yksinkertaisesta. Novitan Kevät 2019 lehdessä oli neulepaita, jonka pitsiyläosaa ihailin. Tämä lehti on jo sen verran vanha, että ohje löytyy ilmaiseksi netistä täältä (suomeksi!).

Villapaita tehdään saumattomasti alhaalta ylöspäin, joten lähdin ensimmäisenä neulomaan hihoja. Tämä oli erinomainen päätös, koska hihamotivaatio on minulta usein poissa jos paidan vartalo on jo neulottu.

Vaikka villapaidan pitsi onkin todella kaunis, sen muoto ei oikein sovi tyyliini. Teinkin paidan omien mittojeni mukaisesti sisällyttäen mukaan vyötärömuotoilut ja avaramman pääntien. Kasvattaakseni raglanin pituutta, toistin yhden pitsikuvioista kaksi kertaa. Paidan ohje on muuten ihan hyvä, mutta pitsiosuuteen ei ole piirretty raglankavennuksia ja ne täytyy itse soveltaa. Tämä laskeminen ei ole kovin hankalaa, mutta tästä syystä en suosittele tätä ohjetta aloittelijoille.

Käytin Filcolana Arwetta lankaa värissä 245 ja 2.5 mm puikkoja. Hihansuiden ja vartalon ala-osan joustinneuleeseen lisäsin langan mukaan ohuen hopealangan (irtostellina). Ostin hopealangan paikallisesta lanka-kaupastani enkä valitettavasti tiedä sen merkkiä tms.

Olen erittäin tyytyväinen neulepaitaani. Minulla on vieläkin ylijäänyttä Arwettaa jonkin verran. Saa nähdä mitä siitä vielä keksin tehdä! Villapaidan Ravelry-projektisivu on täällä.

Wannabe Flax light

In the movie, Devil wears Prada, there is an outfit with a black sweater worn over a white blouse. Inspired by this outfit, I knit a short black sweater. On a nearly daily basis I wear high waisted midi skirts, so I wanted the sweater to cover only a few centimeters of the waistband of my skirts. Therefore, it truly ended up being cropped.


I'm very used to modifying patterns and since I wasn't able to find a ready pattern with the construction and my preferred fit, I decided to wing it. I took the starting stitches and the top-down construction from Flax light with no positive ease, but otherwise I heavily modified the pattern. I added short-rows in the back of the neck and divided the stitches for raglan increases so that I had slightly more for the sleeves. I like to have some more space around the sleeves, especially as I was planning to wear the sweater over a blouse. I made the raglan increases as instructed, but I decided the stopping point for them based on trying on the sweater rather than looking at the pattern. I added short row shaping to the back helm as well to make the back a little longer than the front. The sleeve decreases I again decided based on trying on the sweater.

I used Novita Baby merino yarn and 3.00 mm needles. More details on my Ravelry page. 

I am super happy with how this sweater turned out. I call it my wannabe Flax light, because it is so far from the original pattern. I very warmly recommend the Flax light either for actually following the pattern or as a basis for your own modified sweater!

Elokuvassa Paholainen pukeutuu Pradaan on eräs asu, jossa mustan neulepaidan alla on valkoinen paitapusero. Asusta inspiroituneena halusin neuloa itselleni mustan neulepaidan. Käytän korkeavyötäröisiä midihameita lähes päivittäin, joten halusin neulepaidan helman ulottuvan vain muutamia senttimetrejä hameiden vyötärönauhan päälle. Täten neulepaidasta tulikin todella cropattu.

Olen erittäin tottunut muokkamaan ohjeita enkä löytänyt mieleistäni ohjetta paidalle, joten lähdin muokkaamaan Flax light ohjetta. Otin ohjeesta aloitussilmukoiden määrän (valitsin koon ilman ylimääräistä tilaa) ja ylhäältä alas neulotun rakenteen. Niskaan tein ohjeesta poiketen lyhennettyjä kerroksia ja raglanlisäyksiä varten jaoin silmukat niin, että hihoihin tuli hieman enemmän silmukoita kuin ohjeessa. Tykkään siitä, että hihoissa on jonkin verran väljyyttä. Tämän paidan tapauksessa hihojen väljyys onkin erittäin tärkeää, kun tarkoituksena on käyttää tätä paitapuseron päällä. Tein raglanlisäykset ohjeen mukaisesti, mutta päätin lisäysten lopettamisesta sovituksen perusteella enkä ohjeen mukaan. Paidan takaosaan lisäsin myös helmaan lyhennettyjä kerroksia, jotta takaosasta tulee hieman pidempi kuin etuosasta. Hihojen kavennukset tein taas sovitusten perusteella.

Olen erittäin tyytyväinen paitaan. Annoin paidan nimeksi wannabe Flax light, koska muokkasin sitä niin paljon alkuperäisestä. Voin suositella lämpimästi Flax light ohjetta joko ohjeen oikeaan seuraamiseen tai muokkaamiseen!

No frills cardigan in the office style

Last winter, I rather unplanned bought a burgundy cardigan. Though unplanned, this purchase ended up being one of the most worn pieces of my wardrobe. However, the material of that cardigan is a huge problem, because it is 100% acrylic. The simple look of this cardigan resembles the No frills cardigan by Petiteknit and lucky for me, Filcolana Arwetta Classic had just the right shade of burgundy for my taste. Originally, No frills cardigan calls for Arwetta and Tilia held together, which makes the surface more fluffy and lively, but I wanted mine to be smoother. My plan was to use Arwetta held double, but the result felt bulky and heavy, so I decided to knit a swatch of single-held Arwetta and this I liked a lot. I measured my cauge and calculated from the instructions that I need to go two sizes up to get a cardigan in my preferred fit with my cauge.

I further altered the pattern leaving out the pockets and shortening the length to my hips. My goal was to turn the genius seamless construction into a more feminine and fitted style to match my skirts and dresses in my everyday office clothing.

I am so happy with how my thin No frills cardigan turned out. It is lightweight, but warm and most of all hopefully stays looking nice much longer than the store-bought cardigan. I used 2.5 mm needles with Filcona Arwetta Classic in 245 Bordeaux colorway. More pictures in Ravelry.

Viime talvena ostin heräteostoksena viininpunaisen neuletakin, josta vahingossa tulikin yksi käytetyimmistä vaatteistani. Valitettavasti tämän "villatakin" täysin keinokuituinen materiaali ei ole kuitenkaan säilynyt kovin hyvänä, joten halusin tehdä samantyyppisen villatakin merinovillasta. Ohjeeksi valitsin Petiteknitin No frills cardiganin, koska sen yksinkertainen muotoilu muistuttaa neuletakkiani. Lisäksi, Filcolana Arwetta Classic -langasta löytyi juuri minulle mieluinen viininpunaisen sävy ja juuri tätä lankaa käytetään ohjeessa. Ohjeessa käytetään kuitenkin Arwetan kaverina Tiliaa eli ohutta pörröistä lankaa. En halunnut villatakkiini pörröistä pintaa, joten alkuperäisenä suunnitelmanani oli tehdä villatakki kaksinkertaisella Arwetalla. Kaksinkertainen Arwetta neuloutuu kuitenkin melko painavaksi ja raskaaksi neulokseksi ja en ollut tulokseen tyytyväinen. Teinkin mallitilkun vielä yksinkertaisella Arwetalla ja tähän rakastuin. Laskin tiheydelleni ohjeesta haluamani istuvuuden ja sopivasti minun täytyi vain valita kaksi kokoa isompi kuin mittani sanoisivat eikä laskea koko ohjetta uudestaan.

Tehdessäni villatakkia muokkasin ohjetta lisää ja jätin taskut pois sekä lyhensin villatakin loppumaan lantiolleni. Tavoitteenani oli muokata ohjeen nerokkaan saumattoman rakenteen avulla naisellisempi ja istuvampi neuletakki, joka sopii hameiden ja mekkojen kanssa jokapäiväiseen toimistokäyttöön.

Olen todella tyytyväinen villatakin lopputulokseen. Se on ihanan kevyt, mutta silti lämmin, ja toivottavasti pysyy siistin näköisenä pidempään kuin kaupasta ostamani keinokuitutakki. Käytin 2.5 mm puikkoja ja Filcolana Arwetta Classic -lankaa sävyssä 245 Bordeaux. Lisää kuvia Ravelryssä.

Embrace of the sun

Embrace of the sun by Drops design is the first dress I have ever knit. Simultaneously, it is the largest single piece of knitting I have finished. The dress took me nearly two months to finish, but needless to say, I was occupied by work and courses as well, so I was not knitting each and every day. To me it felt like the dress finished superfast. The pattern is constructed seamlessy top-down, which I very much enjoy! I am not particularly a fan of purling...

I unfortunately had some sizing issues with the dress. I started doing size M for the yoke and top portion, though for waist I altered the pattern to be something between sixes S and M. The hips were however a massive trouble. My original plan was to return to size M, but when I reached that, I quickly realised there was no way I would fit it. So, I sized up and tried the dress on. Eventually, I ended up with size XXL hips and helm. I am not using the suggested yarn of the pattern, but since the top fits me so well, it lefts me wondering how the sizing of the helm was designed?

I used size 3.00 mm needles in various lenghts, and Drops Cotton Light yarn in 05 Light Pink. I absolutely love the color of the yarn. This will be my perfect spring and summer dress. Even though knitting a dress is a big project, I loved it so much that I am planning a darker dress for autumn and winter. Ravelry project here.

Dropsin Embrace the sun on elämäni ensimmäinen neulottu mekko sekä suurin yksittäinen neuletyö, minkä olen ikinä tehnyt. Mekon neulomiseen meni lähes kaksi kuukautta aikaa, mutta luonnollisesti työt ja kurssit vievät myös aikaani enkä ehdi ihan joka päivä neuloa. Minulle jäi kuitenkin sellainen tunne, että mekko edistyi ja valmistui nopeasti. Mekko neulotaan ylhäältä alas ilman saumoja, mikä on yksi mieluisimmista tyyleistä minulle.

Valitettavasti minulla oli melko suuria ongelmia ohjeen koon kanssa. Aloitin tekemään kokoa M, joka istui minulle todella hyvin kaarrokkeesta ja yläosasta. Vyötäröä muokkasin johonkin S:n ja M:n väliin, mutta lantion mitoitus oli omiin mittoihini nähden aivan pielessä. Alkuperäisenä suunnitelmanani oli palata kokoon M, mutta huomasin nopeasti sen olevan aivan liian pieni. Lopulta, lukuisten sovitusten ja suurennusten jälkeen, lantio ja helma ovat mekossani kokoa XXL. Käytin eri lankaa kuin ohjeessa, mutta silti M on minulle todella hyvä yläosasta, joten miten alaosan mitoitus on ohjeeseen oikein tehty?

Käytin 3.00 mm puikkoja ja Dropsin Cotton light lankaa värissä 05 Light pink. Rakastuin langan väriin todella paljon! Tämä mekko on täydellinen näin kevääksi ja kesäksi. Vaikka mekon neulominen onkin suuri projekti, suunnittelen tummempaa mekkoa käytettäväksi syksyllä ja talvella. Projekti Ravelryssä täällä.
